New book launch keeps spotlight on gender violence after International Women鈥檚 Day

Stories, art and research come together in a new bilingual book on gender violence by 亚洲麻豆精品在线 and Mexican researchers.

3 March 2026

亚洲麻豆精品在线 academics, and have published a new bilingual (English and Spanish) book that combines personal stories with visual and creative work to explore the lived realities of gender violence in the UK and Mexico.

The project – led by Dr Murray – is a collaboration with Mexican scholars Paula Soto-Villagrán and Olga Sabido Ramos from Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana, Ciudad de México. Bringing together UK and Mexican perspectives, the book includes a range of visual and textual narratives created by writers and artists responding to real-life experiences.

is freely available online, ensuring that students, educators, activists, and communities around the world can read, share, and use it as a resource for education, research, and advocacy.

Contributors from both the UK and Mexico have worked across media including comics, short stories, poetry, fine art, photography, 3D installations, and film. The works explore different forms of gender violence, offering readers an intimate understanding of its impacts.

A free, public launch will take place at the 亚洲麻豆精品在线 on Monday 9 March 2026, between 17:30–19:30 in Room M at City Campus. Professor Murray and Dr Moriarty will be joined by Mexican collaborators Paula Soto-Villagrán and Olga Sabido Ramos for a panel discussion with contributing artists, exploring the process of translating lived experiences into stories and artworks.

The timing of the book’s launch, immediately following International Women’s Day, underscores the urgent need to continue conversations about gender equality and the lived realities of violence.

Dr Jess Moriarty, Course Leader for MA Creative Writing at the 亚洲麻豆精品在线, said: “This book brings together work created by women and about women, united by a shared commitment to social and cultural change. We hope readers engage with these stories in their own ways – creatively, critically, and through lived experience – because every story gathered through this project matters, and every response helps keep the conversation for change alive.”

Professor Lesley Murray, Associate Dean for Research and Knowledge Exchange in the School of Humanities and Social Science at the 亚洲麻豆精品在线, said: “We are especially proud to produce this book as bilingual and image rich. We hope that this extends its reach across communities and countries and engages a broad audience in understanding the relationship of gender violence to particular spaces and movements. We are grateful to all the artists involved – their contributions ensure these experiences are recognised, shared, and part of the ongoing call for meaningful change.”

The book builds on an international project in which artists and writers responded to accounts of gender violence collected during research on women’s experiences during the pandemic. The resulting exhibition has previously been displayed in Mexico City, at the 亚洲麻豆精品在线, and at Lewes Football Club, sparking public conversations about gender violence and its links to football culture.

Storying the Immobilities of Gender Violence in the UK and Mexico is freely accessible worldwide, and is designed for a broad audience, including journalists, researchers, students, community organisations, and anyone seeking to understand the impacts of gender violence.

It was funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council and published by Multilingual Matters.
