What you can expect in a quiet, supported flat
Starting university and moving into halls is big step and can be even more challenging for autistic students. Some students also have sensory needs which means that living in halls can be very difficult and noisy for them. In response to this we have been working closely with the Accommodation Team to provide a quieter flat for autistic students who may have similar needs and might benefit from additional support.
We aim to allocate students together who consider themselves to have a ‘quieter lifestyle’. This is a living environment where residents show extra consideration to their flatmates in keeping noise to a minimum wherever possible i.e no large social gatherings, single visitors and TV and music kept at a low volume. Please note we cannot guarantee a permanent quiet environment as communal living will always involve some level of noise, including from outside the flat.
Support available
We provide students in the flat with a range of support:
- Online, pre-arrival meeting with the Residential Wellbeing Team to talk about everything you need to know before you move into halls.
- You will be assigned a student mentor who will visit regularly throughout the year and make sure you are settling into your accommodation and life at the university.
- An allocated member of staff from the Residential Wellbeing Team will schedule regular meetings to provide advice and guidance and check if you need any additional support.
- The student mentors organise and deliver social events in the halls. There is an opportunity for you to interact with other residents and try new activities.
- Staff Residential Advisers are also on-call for all students each night from 7:30pm – 07:30am and are in place to provide pastoral support and respond to any emergencies overnight.
